Supervisors Biddle & Lipscomb Announcement for Work Initiative - October 13, 2011
MILWAUKEE COUNTY - Supervisors Eyon Biddle (10th District) and Supervisor Theodore Lipscomb (1st District) have partnered the last 6 months and on October 13, 2011, LAUNCHED the "Ready-to-Work" Initiative.
The initiative aims to create job access for Milwaukee County residents who have demonstrated prior success, such as attaining a high school diploma (or GED) and maintaining a valid Driver’s License, yet cannot seem to reach the high-wage, family-supporting jobs that are currently available.
Training for the initiative will be provided by the Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership & BIG STEP in collaboration with Milwaukee Area Technical College, Milwaukee Public Schools, and Milwaukee Area Building and Construction Trades.
"We applaud Supervisors Biddle and Lipscomb and look forward to ensuring that each of the partners do not duplicate "past transgressions" of transparency and accountability," said Mary Glass, Chair/CEO. "Further, Milwaukee Professionals Association will recommend that our third state-statute/state-supported public school, UW-Milwaukee, weigh in NOW for undergraduate, graduate degrees - certificates and "building projects" of apprenticeship and procurement. Wisconsin Senator Larson's Page - October 14, 2011
Wisconsin Senator Chris Larson - 7th District
Keeping Wisconsin's Young Adults Informed Senate Republicans have been circulating legislation to overturn Wisconsin's Healthy Youth Act. This new legislative proposal seeks to deny Wisconsin's youth vital education information regarding contraceptives and sexually transmitted disease prevention.
Wisconsinites Support Comprehensive Sex Education
Statistics show that comprehensive sex education is valued by a vast majority of Wisconsinites. According to the Wisconsin Alliance for Women's Health, approximately 87% of Wisconsin voters support requiring comprehensive sex education instruction that includes information about both abstinence and contraception.
The medical community is also strongly supportive of human growth and development classes, such as the Healthy Youth Act. This includes well-respected, nonpartisan organizations like the American Medical Association, the American School Health Association and the Institute of Medicine.
What Makes Sex Education Classes Effective?Effective, medically-accurate, and age-appropriate human growth and development courses should discuss and provide information on the following items:
Recognizing and preventing sexual abuse and dating violence
Understanding the physical and emotional changes of puberty and adolescence
Healthy relationships including family, friends and dating
Healthy life skills such as goal-setting, decision-making and stress management
How drugs and alcohol impair judgment
The importance of abstinence as the only certain way to prevent unintended pregnancy and STDs
How to prevent pregnancy and STDs through correct use of birth control methods
Healthy Youth Act Helps Our Community
The positive impact of the Healthy Youth Act on Wisconsin's young adults can be seen right here in our community. According to the Milwaukee Health Department, Milwaukee's teen birthrate has dropped dramatically for the second year in a row. From 2008 to 2009, the rate fell from 46.73 births per 1,000 teens to 41.30 births per 1,000 teens. Preliminary data released this past Tuesday show a drop to 35.68 births per 1,000 teens in 2010.
Information is Key to Success of Our Young AdultsThe legislative proposal recently introduced by Governor Walker and Senate Republicans is yet another example of their attempts to keep Wisconsinites in the dark by suppressing vital information from the public. The Legislature should be focusing on ensuring that all Wisconsinites, including our young adults, have equal and adequate access to vital information on health care issues, including sexual health. I will continue doing what I can to ensure that we are providing such information to protect our citizens from preventable health issues, including sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancy.

Milwaukee Professionals Association adds student "POSSE" group
October 11, 2011
MILWAUKEE - ALL Hands on Deck, WE, Not Me Initiative continues to expand the possibilities and bolster opportunities for UNCOVERING “hidden talent” (students all ages), “emerging” and “submerging” businesses to promote development, wealth-building and sustainability in the City of Milwaukee.
The latest explansion is connected to Safety Matters Response Network/SMRN. SMRN was created to address the outbreaks of revolts/protests of youth-teens-young adults in the Milwaukee area in a proactive way that called for "involvement" and "leadership-citizenship-problem solving" by youth-teens-young adults.
The first outgrowth of SMRN is the Safety Matters Exploratory Team lead by college level students.
"To connect the youth-teen commitment, we are today adding: POSSE", said Mary Glass, Chair/CEO, Milwaukee Professionals Association.
SMRN POSSE is an incubator approach. It is modelled after other Posse programs; i.e., The POSSE Foundation Inc. and UW-Madison Posse program. Our approach is to recognize potential and add value that includes mentoring that will help the student to gain a diploma, certificate, internship, fellowship, honor roll, apprenticeship and any other stepping stone to success. We seek students with proven potential as well as students with potential but lacking in communication skills. The benefit is for those mentoring (college-level) and youth-teen students.
For the next 12 months, October 10, 2011 – October 9, 2012, we will provide the framework while initiating the “incubator” track.
Our primary target students are from the public schools in the City of Milwaukee. We seek to “impact behavior" through linked-connected-committed public education provided by Wisconsin law - Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee Area Technical College and University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
We will use "CASE LEARNING”, and neighborhood-level volunteerism. FOR updates.

Diversity Conference focus on "COMMUNITY" - African American and Latino Males
"The forum is a great chance for us to not only give an update on diversity issues at the University, but to focus into diversity topics and initiatives of critical importance," says Dr. Damon A. Williams, UW–Madison Vice Provost for Diversity and Climate. "This year's forum and the focus on the educational crisis facing male youth of color, the barriers to opportunity for undocumented students and issues involving LGBTQ community and campus climate are of critical importance.",
MADISON, WI - The 2011 UW-Madison Diversity Forum was held Thursday, October 6, 2011, 8:30am - 4:30pm at Union South in Varsity Hall on the 2nd Floor.
The Diversity Department has a NEW focus of CREATING COMMUNITY - Promoting Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at UW–Madison.
The efforts of the Diversity Department focuses on all areas of diversity, it includes:
- Continued learners
- Disabled learners
- Gender
- Nationality
- Race/Ethnicity
- Religion
- Veterans
- others
This year's highlight was on the urgency of providing Educational opportunities for African American and Latino males who have data supporting an enduring and concentrated level of poverty - a huge gap of access-literacy-fluency.
Kenote Speaker - Dr. Pedro Noguera, Sociologist Professor from New York University. His scholarship and research focuses on th ways in which schools are influenced by social and economic conditions in the urban environment. He has published over 150 research articles, monographs and research reports on topics. He is the author of 5 books. He has taught in the public schools in Rhode Island and California; as well as held tenured faculty appoints at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dr. Noguera appears as a regular commentator on educational issues on CNN, National Public Radio and other national news outlets.
The presentation given by Dr. Noguera present hands-on points for awareness and actions for reform. He received a standing ovation.
One of his first points was that the "Crisis" in males of African American and Latino heritage is an "American Problem". However, it is presented as an African American or Latino problem with blaming the victim of things beyond his control.
Secondly, that the problems of African American and Latino males have been misdiagnosed, therefore it has grown and is more debilating.
There is need for a counter-narrative to break the cycle of failure.
Thirdly, that there is "so little outrage" - That the discourse is either driven by phobia and/or fettish - extreme thinking. On the one hand, African American men are portrayed as a danger. However, when it comes to Sports (because of the awe - success), African American males are respected with devotion. For the Latino male, he is seen as "invisible".
Dr. Noguera spoke of the crisis conditions that have engulfed the African American and Latino male as a "syndrome" likened to the AIDS (Acquired-Immune-Deficiency-Syndrome) virus. The immune system has been attacked and there are no buffers - no antidote.
That the needs must be met - child developmental needs put in place - Maslow law of hierarchy of needs are needed for preparing for life.
He gave the names of schools that have shown exemplary progress with African American males, such as Urban Prep and Thurgood Marshall in Harlem.
He also spoke of how we, the educators are complicit in the problem of driving up the negatives for non-empowerment. He gave a story about an assistant principal prejudging an African American student with "adjustment" issues. The assistant principal said, " the little boy would wound up in prison like his father and his brother because he was a behavior problem." However, when he was asked what he was doing to prevent or offer intervention to his prediction, he was surprised. For he felt the child was not his problem. In other words, he was a casuality - doomed. The assistant principal was African American.
We must make choices that influence a more positive outcome and not be menacing.
"I found him fantastic,right-on target, said Mary Glass, Chair/CEO, Milwaukee Professionals Association. "We look forward to him being our 2012 Keynote speaker for Safety Matters 2012 Diversity Conference in Milwaukee."
====================
Kaleem Caire, CEO, Urban League of Greater Madison, provided an interesting and data-driven powerpoint presentation about the specifics of the crisis in Madison - Dane County.
Mr. Caire is known for his work with youth. As part of the solution, he is in the process of building a single-sex (male) charter school in Madison - Madison Prep
He received pledged support from the floor to help provide "research" data to support his present efforts with the Madison School Board.
Employment of African American and Latino Males
Employment was one of the strong points of deficits he mentioned that speaks to the "gap" of disparity.
One salient point related to UW-Madison's procurement opportunities that are glaringly missing to African American and Latino males.
He pointed to the fact that the NEWLY built Memorial South building that we were having the Diversity Forum in had a Caucasian-only viewing of workers. In other words, African American and Latinos were not seen during the erecting of Memorial South.

Dr. Damon Williams, Vice Provost & Chief Diversity Officer is driving a NEW agenda to implement an integrated inclusion and diversity program at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. It is apparent one of his dynamics is his inter-culture and cross-culture awareness efforts.
He gave a due diligence powerpoint presentation that shared updates on his campus-wide efforts. It is an integrated approach rather than a centralized or de-centralized approach. His department is looking for ways of, How they can be MORE engaged".
Dr. Williams shared efforts brought about at the University of Michigan that included Supreme Court legal decisions.

Remembering Steven Paul Jobs - The man who change the thinking about . . .
1955 - 2011
On October 4, 2011 - at 56 years, Steven Paul Jobs joined the many who have completed their journey here and moved on to another existence unknown by us.
When I turned on the television on Wednesday, the commentator was going over his wonderful gifts to all of us. He was comparing him to Thomas Edison, many other icons, giving a historic list of all his accomplishments. He was talking about his talent, his genius - What he has left for us to marvel or be enriched over.
He talked about how the evils of cancer will take over the body and deplete it of life.
Legacy
Steven has opened the door - some little boy or girl - some young man or woman is out there waiting to share their gifts - to pick up where he left off. The good news is he left something for them to hitch their ideas to; whether it is his inventions, management style, wealth-building and/or stick-to-it campaign for his life as well as his business.
We wish him a happy trail on his journey and we say to him, thanks - well done.
To his four children, his wife and family members - good thoughts and God's strength.

Call for "Hidden Talent" and BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Professionals Association is seeking interested college-level students of Color (African American-American Indian-Asian-Latino) and Work-Challenged (income-class) families that feel they have talent, but their talent or the enhancement of their talent is going "lacking".
We define "talent" as: a capacity for achievement or success; ability (Random House).
Multi-Racial and Class
The population disparity and lack of growth reveals some truths that we are addressing right-up-front in our quest to "Re-define", "Re-brand" and "Un-trap" those who have/are "by-design" discriminated against and held to a negative normalcy factor.
We seek to REFORM with a TRANSFORMATION for identifying and investing in "hidden talent" at the neighborhood level - Where one lives.
======================
It is important that we note that today's college population is representative of many mixtures of races. And, as we continue to move further in this century, it will increase.
======================
Why do we Call for YOU?
To draw attention to how disproportionately you are in the marketplace.
To draw attention to YOU that opportunities are out there, GO GET THEM.
To correct the stereotypes, broadbrushing, pitting-one-race-against another; and to expose the hypocracy that is rampart and holding YOU back.
To claim your American rights.
======================
What will we do?
You will APPLY yourself rigorously in the areas of academics and practicum experiences.
You will engage in CASE Learning to match talent and knowledge with the "gap" in neighborhoods of enduring concentrated poverty.
You will sharpen your communication skills so you can be a one-to-one-to-many voice in the public square.
You will invest part of your day in current events that tells and/or explains the coming and goings in the public square.
You will engage in music, art, theatre to be well-rounded.
You will register to vote - encourage others to vote - and, YOU will vote.
You will look at the coming future and help ensure that you are building an infrastructure that allows you, your family and neighbors to fulfill your dreams and desires.
You will get strength and wisdom from your ancestors who have "paid-the-price" so many times; but, would not stop because they wanted to "keep HOPE alive" for you and yours - You must do the same.
You will engage in being a Scholar - a Scholar that shares his/her knowledge for the betterment of fellowmen as well as a way to navigate our society for your benefits.
======================
You will become (your decision) a member of the Student Facebook Think Tank page we are creating. This is a social link that is geared to sharing information that is globally informing and geared for talent building. Therefore, it will require substantive information - not chat-miscellaneous.

10 Fashion Tips For Young Men
By: Lynn Wallace
Break Studios Contributing Writer
If you’re a youthful guy and want to look pulled together and stylish, follow these 10 fashion tips for young men. It will take some effort and attention to current fashion, but it will be worth it when you get noticed for your polished look. These 10 fashion tips will help you get there.
- Wear clothes that fit. Oversized shirts or pants that are too tight can be distracting and make you appear to be trying too hard. If you can’t find something on the rack that fits, buy the size that fits the largest part of your body and have it tailored.
- Wear clothes that are suitable for the occasion. In other words, don’t wear an outfit to a job interview that you’d wear to a rock concert.
- Get rid of wrinkles. Iron your shirts and trousers or use a steamer. The rumpled look isn’t a good style for anyone, including young men.
- Keep your shoes polished. All the fashion tips in the world are pointless if your shoes are scuffed and worn out.
- Your belt should be in the same color family as your shoes. You’ll look more pulled together and fashionable.
- Wear dark socks with dress pants. Nothing looks dorkier or more out of fashion on a young man than white socks with a suit.
- Keep your underwear where they belong—under your outerwear. You can follow fashion tips ‘til the cows come home, but exposing your skivvies isn’t cool.
- A well made leather jacket is a must-have in any young man’s wardrobe. Nothing says confidence better than a man in a hot looking leather jacket.
- Every man needs a versatile blazer. Wear it with dress slacks and a button-down shirt or throw it on over a T-shirt and jeans.
- Find out what colors flatter you. Walk a wide berth around anything that makes you look sickly, fat or tired.

Wisconsin Voter Rights Targeted Again
This past Tuesday, Republicans set the stage to roll back the ability of Wisconsin Students to use their college ID to vote and prohibit the use of certain technologies in recall elections. Click on the video above for more information.
While Scott Walker and his rubberstamp legislators have been working to silence Wisconsin's voters, I have been working hard to keep Wisconsin's voters informed of their rights. I have created a simple handout answering some of the most frequently asked questions surrounding Wisconsin's new voter restrictions.
